Ilumos-based SchilliX release as a DVD ISO

Added by Jon Strabala over 3 years ago

This appears to be the first Illumos-based "distro" on an ISO (too big for a CD so it needs a DVD).

This is a SchilliX release based on Illumos (the Community controlled OpenSolaris Source) rather than Oracle source.

SchilliX-0.7.1i was updated from (SchilliX-0.7.1 non-Illumos) to use the Illumos snapshot from September 3rd 2010 which is OpenSolaris Nevada Build 147

For those that do not want to build/compile the kernel this is an exciting milestone.

And how do you uncompress a .xz file on Solaris?

I am running snv_111 and don't seem to have an unzx (which if you use Google thinks you
mis-spelled UNIX).

And how do you uncompress a .xz file on Solaris?

On the same site as the download there is a binary called xz that you can download and use. You can also compile it from sources if you wish.

Hooray for a first bootable iso of Illumos :)

Anyhow seems like someone tries to resurrect long forgotten archive formats. (xz)

This is a bit off topic (a discussion about 'xz'), however I think 'xz' is a bit newer than you think.

When I had to use 'xz' prior to burning the SchilliX-0.7.1i ISO. I wanted to know what 'xz' was and how it performmed and did some research it can compresses much smaller than gzip. Apparently 'xz' can create 30 % smaller output than 'gzip' and 15 % smaller output than 'bzip2'. This savings is significant for a large 1GB+ distro and well worth any extra CPU to compress the ISO

However it is not so popular (yet?) and was only recently added to GNU tar on 2009-03-05. The compressor/decompressor seems to be a rename of LZMAutils which was initially released around October 2007. I am not saying 'xz' is the best in all cases but it is one of many compressors that fit a specific niche. If you do a good search you will find many benchmarks and comparisons.

If you are on the hunt for archiving software with better compression than gzip, bzip et al the following page could be a useful guide:

http://www.maximumcompression.com/data/summary_mf.php#data

I'm willing to bet that a lot of the archivers on the list are significantly better than xz. the PAQ8 compressor has had the lead for quite a while now in terms of compression ratio but it is very very slow...
