Suggestion to keep non-expert OpenSolaris Users interested ...

Added by Alexander Walz over 3 years ago

Hello,

I am an ordinary non-expert user of OpenSolaris 134 and I develop C applications and also surf the net
with it. I really like OpenSolaris.

To keep momentum with the current but surely soon waning interest into OpenSolaris follow-ups, I would
like to propose that you at least provide an alpha ISO image of Illumos or any architecture documents
so that Non-DB Admin-people like me will keep interest.

It would also be fine if Illumos could directly boot into Gnome. Nexenta for example seems to be console
based only, and SchilliX does seem to support plain X only. This will deter `Xubuntu`-minded users like me.

Any information on your site about OpenSource contribution rules would be helpful.

There are people working on getting an "updated" OpenSolaris kind of distribution made, which uses the illumos code as it's base. From the last information I've heard about the project, they aim to have the first release ready later in September.

Thank you for this hint - I am looking forward to it and hope a link would be provided from your site. Alex
