I think we need some guidelines about posting here. And probably also separated categories?

Agreed ...

We are very soon going to need sub categories and sub-sub categories, especially if all the OpenSolaris Forum traffic decides to move here in the future.

Does this forum system allow persistent links as well, we could then have an etiquette post as the first on the list.

Agreed on creating a new forums. Yes, there are sticky threads as well. I'm currently unable to set these up, but will do so soon.

There we go, a little organization now. Etiquette guides will need to be written; do we have a volunteer to write some drafts?

wow that was quick! :)

We're on the ball here!

I am not entirely sure if I have missed something regarding Jonathan Adam's reply.

To the point:
Other open source communities have really extensive etiquette. While I am not sure that it is necessary to be that extensive, one could "salvage" in a courteous fashion from the FreeBSD mailing list etiqette (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/articles/mailing-list-faq/etiquette.html) and the Gentoo developer-relations etiquette (http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/devrel/handbook/handbook.xml?part=3&chap=2). These two are more or less concise ... only that we could post that a little bit shorter ;-)

I am still uncertain if the forums on illumos.org really need such a thing as a etiquette. After all, we are adults and should be able to behave and treat each other a decent human beings. While it is certainly true, that on some open-source forums one can observe the precise opposite, that is, I believe, a problem one cannot meet with policy or etiquette.

Should such a thing as an explicit etiquette be desired nevertheless, I have enclosed a stub on which one could build or take out desired parts and discard the rest.

My only concern with one of the documents, is that they sometimes end up being used as a bludgeon. It might be worthwhile to put one up that reads simply "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Most of us already know reasonable etiquette, and I've found that those who don't, tend to either not read these documents or read them only to see where they can push the envelope without getting banned.

I really like this forum, no need to change it.

RE: These Forums - Added by Jonathan Adams over 3 years ago

So do I, now. They've already changed them :)
