Feature #10918
closedEnable NTP service by default
0%
Description
I am perplexed that ntp service, though installed, does not run on new system by default.
Shortly after installation in VirtualBox guest, time is off by 1-2 seconds compared to my host (where NTP service is on).
Surely there's a reason it's off by default?

Note that you'll probably need to sign up for a Vendor-specific DNS name if you intend to ship a pre-configured NTP configuration in OpenIndiana. See the NTP pool vendor page for information: https://www.ntppool.org/en/vendors.html
We did this for SmartOS (N.smartos.pool.ntp.org
) quite some time ago and I recall it being pretty easy to do.

If you enable it by default, ensure that this applies only to GZ.

Thanks Josh. We eventually figured out that we acquired the vendored pool quite some time ago :).

Seeing how surprisingly difficult this is, I am not convinced, we need this. Documentation should do.
