Description

Observed using OpenIndiana 2019.05:

The Gparted partition editor does not recognize disks that have been formatted using "zfs create".

Such disks are labelled as "unknown".

However, the feature list of Gparted states that ZFS partitions are detected:
https://gparted.org/features.php

Perhaps, the problem only occurs for entire disks formatted in ZFS.

system/storage/parted used by Gparted is like 10 years old. In some 50 % of cases it's crashing for me in various setups. Perhaps we should remove it from the ISO and/or the distribution.

I think that Gparted is a useful tool. Removing it would be a loss.

I can't tell if system/storage/parted is 10-year old; the page
http://pkg.openindiana.org/dev/manifest/0/system%2Fstorage%2Fparted%401.8.8%2C5.11-0.151.1.9%3A20140117T211132Z
seems to tell the package is dated 2014.

But I think that the version of Gparted itself is quite old.
The About menu mentions version 0.4.5 (2004-2009).

But the latest version is 1.0.0 dated May 2019
(https://gparted.org/news.php). So, perhaps, Gparted
just needs to be upgraded rather than removed.

I agree, but in current state it fails for too many scenarios. It's either fixed, or removed.

Most importantly the parted library, not Gparted - the GUI - is the problem here.

That only means that it was rebuilt on /dev branch in 2014, /hipster is the current and only OI branch.

The important part is when the version of parted was released and 1.8.8 was released in mid 2007. Note that our version is heavily patched and is not trivial to re-patch a newer version which is required for Gparted.
