Description

Unable to boot live image for install because of panic. Message is "panic[cpu0]/thread=ffffff0003f07c20: ddi_dma_nextcookie() called too many times on handle ffffff018a3ad480

Host hypervisor is Oracle VM Server 3.4.6, a Xen based hypervisor (similar to Citrix Xen) freely available from http://yum.oracle.com. Noticed similar issue with OmniOS when attempting to configure networking - the install runs until net device initialization then panics. dilOS and Solaris 10 and 11 do not display this issue (and networking performs as expected with those systemc).

Unable to retrieve a dump because install images states dump not configured.

Do you know if the things that you're trying to run have the fix for #12712? I suspect that might be what you're hitting.

Hi Robert,

Certainly sounds like it, doesn't it?

I thought I had included the release label in the initial report but didn't - the downloaded media is OI-hipster-{gui,text}-20200504.iso, which appears to have been released ~3 months ago, while the bug closure you referenced was dated about a month ago so I suspect the fix hasn't propagated to the release media yet. Let me check and see if there is a pre release download available rather than the stable version I was trying out.

Will update with results.

Update - no install media more recent than the 20200504 label found. Since I'm a total newbie here, what can I do to ensure that fix makes it into the next release of install media?

Hi Scott, I'm sure off hand on that, sorry. I don't work on OI specifically (just saw that this was related to work I had done on the illumos side of the house). My rough understanding is that the media is just cut from whatever's in illumos-gate at the time, so that should be sufficient and nothing else should be required, but honestly I'm not 100% sure.
