Description

Hi all,

I'm running OI 2020.04 snapshot, patched to the most recent image-update (illumos-12faddfc96). The machine in question is a Lenovo ThinkPad T61.

The issues is that at least twice today, the MATE desktop (started via lightdm) has crashed, bringing me to a bare command line in root. (I had started MATE with "# pfexec svcadm enable lightdm".) In this momentary state, any input of mine at the command line is rendered onscreen as gibberish (non-standard ASCII characters?) before lightdm restarts.

It has been a while since I've last reported an OI bug (or used OI/illumos on bare metal), so please forgive any missing info in this initial report. Conversely, please let me know if there's any system data I can provide.

Other than the above issue, everything is working great and the system looks and feels more polished than ever. =)

Thank you for your time and attention.

Cheers,
James

Here's an unlisted YouTube video of it happening again after the computer being booted again after a few hours of being off:

The video starts just a few seconds after MATE/lightdm crashed again.

For what it's worth, every time it has crashed it has been while I've been using Firefox within MATE, whereas i used Firefox within twm and did not experience this issue.

My system is now patched up to illumos-1dee82f4f4 (current as of November 12), and will report here on whether or not the above issue persists. (This image-update installed 367 new packages, so who knows if that in itself may smooth over the problem described above.)

The issue seems to have resolved itself as of today's update, and so I'm okay with it now being closed. (I don't see where I can close it myself.)
