Hi,
I found the fix to this problem by fixing Bug 1830. The problem was due to the fact that the SFEencumbered repository has a broken LAME library download. The LAME library lists it includes /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0, however the file is not included in the download. To resolve the problem I mounted an old oi_151 boot environment and copied the file to my current boot environment. So now both VLC and SMPlayer can play DVDs again.
Please fix the LAME library in the SFEencumbered repository to that it includes /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0
