While SMF provides a means to change the kernel keymap, oi appears to lack any facility for changing the keyboard layout within the Gnome desktop. The gdm login screen is likewise locked into a single keyboard layout. This seemingly trivial matter makes the graphical desktop virtually unusable if multiple users share a computer, but each requires a different language/keyboard.

The lack of keyboard selection in Gnome appears to be specific to openindiana, as other Gnome 2.30 implementations have this facility (see attached window capture from a commercial competitor's desktop).

  • Priority changed from Normal to Urgent
  • Difficulty changed from Medium to Bite-size

The problem is in old JDS build of Gnome which is missing support for libxklavier. Newer JDS/Gnome releases integrated it on Solaris, so we need to update JDS/Gnome.

Personally I rebuilt few needed bits to have the support integrated.

I am raising priority of this because lack of proper keymap switch is real pain for non-Latin1 codetable users.
