On OpenIndiana oi_147, system throws the following warning when calling man:
Reformatting page. Please Wait...warning: geqn should have been given a `-Tutf8' option

This is a side effect of having /usr/gnu/bin before /usr/bin in the path. /usr/bin/groff is the correct groff(1). A workaround might be to make sure man(1) runs /usr/bin/groff explicitly.

The actual problem is not groff(1), but /usr/gnu/bin/neqn and /usr/gnu/bin/nroff.
