Did you have to go back to the oi_151a3 boot environment or did going back to the original oi_151a4 BE work? The updates in the last 24 hours automatically created a new BE, as your update output shows, so you should have the original without the recent updates.
If the only difference between working and not working is the updates in the last 24 hours then I would suspect the NVIDIA driver update. Could you let us know which graphics card you have please.

Hi John,
for me it looks like NVIDIA driver too...
I could go back to oi_151a4 too. Just doesn't like to have several BEs of same version.
Here from Xorg.0.log (attached):
(II) May 08 13:53:40 NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 8400GS (GT218) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0)
Thanks and regards.

Sorry for misreading your name, Jon!

Is it completely crashing or do you still have SSH access? The workaround would be to only install the non-nvidia updates or if you have SSH access you could roll back the nvidia updates with:
jt ~ (jt-ec-oi.): pfexec pkg update -vn nvidia@0.295.40 nvidia-incorporation@0.5.11-0.151.1.4:20120503T051913Z
