Menu: [System][Pref][Print] error: "desktop-print-management-prefs is not available from cups print service"
Added by Rob Clark over 11 years ago.

Description
When I use the Menu [System][Pref][Print] I get this error:
"desktop-print-management-prefs is not available from cups print service"
I am unable to find "desktop-print-management-prefs" in either Repository and the other 'Print related' Programs are not what is required.
Thanks,
Rob

desktop-print-management-prefs
is the application displaying the error message. CUPS is the default print service and can be managed via http://localhost:631/, or you can switch to the Solaris print system with print-service -s lp
.
While the management UI for Solaris lp and the configuration dialog (Presto/OSPM) that appears automatically when a printer is detected is quite nice, the backend isn't quite as featureful or flexible as CUPS (and has nasty stuff like requiring Apache 1 for IPP support).
We may want to import existing management tools for CUPS if JDS doesn't get one first (which they may as Oracle intends to phase out Solaris lp).
