Bug #638
closedaudio playback regression since b134
0%
Description
Happened to try rhythmbox since upgrading to b148 on my Shuttle SN41G2 (32-bit AMD barton).
In b134, sound was ok, just needed to kick the priority up in order to prevent skipping.
In b148, I don't have the skipping problem, but after about 20 seconds the sound goes scratchy...
upon an occasion or two, it came back clear after a minute or two, but mostly it doesn't.
I've tried mp3, mp2 and flac. I'll see how it works on a 64 bit system...

Two small updates to the issue...
. The priority change is still needed to prevent skipping, it's just a little less noticeable
basically any firefox activity make the sound go staccato...
. I tried rhythmbox to a web radio (the first choice 'absolute classic rock' is fine) and the behaviour is the same (after a bit scratchy noise) then after a minute or two it comes clear again then a bit later this scenario repeats itself.
Perhaps this is a buffering problem of some sort... in any event the problem can be be reproduced and unfortunately the sound system is useless to an end user expecting a functioning sound card.
For info, here is an extract from messages at startup:

- File oss-configure.log oss-configure.log added
after noticing http://www.illumos.org/issues/933 , I thought I'd also give OSS4.2 a try.
First of all, the binary packages on the website, compiled probably on Solaris10, only caused a panic, so I followed more or less to a letter bug 933, and the quality problems seem largely resolved!
It appears this "boomer" stuff has serious problems with some nvidia chips.
BTW, here is the configure output in the attached file... I'm using CBE version 1.8.0 and sunstudio12U1

Duplicate of Illumos issue 933. Immediate workaround is to use OSS >=4.2. Closing ticket.
