Description

When I enter "pfexec svcadm disable lightdm", OI Hipster exits from MATE but freezes up before going to terminal, with some sort of rectangular shape near the bottom of the screen. I get an identical or very similar result from both the fresh install of the 2016.10 iso and the most recent possible upgrade, in this case illumos-202ca9ae46. (I have attached a pic of my computer during this freeze.)

This install is on a Dell Inspiron 1525, and according to the Device Driver Utility it has Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller as the primary and secondary drivers.

Please let me know if there is any other specific information that I can provide to help resolve the issue.

Have you activated VTs ? (Virtual Terminals) as a workaround:
They might give you acess to the console(s) if GUI stops working or it is disabled, as in your case.

I followed the directions shown in the link provided, and it is not allowing any sort of workaround. (Full disclosure: I have a working understanding of VTs themselves, but am unsure of how to use them as a workaround for this issue due to my own ignorance...)

Does your adapter use the i915 or vesa driver?

It is using the i915 driver.

The driver i915 is known to fail to restore the console at Xorg exit with some adapters.
If you have a system dump or a core dump, it would help to fix the issue.
Thank you.

Thanks for the tip. This is my first time going through the process of generating a crash dump, so you have triggered some learning on my part. :)

Are there alternatives to the i915 driver, or at least a different build of it that's known to work? I ask mainly because OI Hipster is the only OS where the system crashes after exiting Xorg.

Providing a backtrace to help fixing the i915 driver is the only option so far. ;)

Now that I pushed the update to Xorg 1.19.5 I'll be able to spend some time looking the issue with the intel driver.
Thank you for your comprehension and again sorry about the annoyance ...

No worries...I appreciate your efforts on behalf of myself and the other users. :)
